The *mostly* perfect Mother's Day.

I am woken by Dani and Tori, stuffed animals in tow, asking to snuggle.  They climb into our bed around 7am, and hug, and hop, bounce around.  After a few minutes, I step into the bathroom to brush my teeth.  Tori sneaks in, "Happy Mother's Day!" she exclaims.  I come back into the bedroom and there are presents, lots of them, wrapped in Christmas wrap, which seems to be a trend in our house.  Dani has decorated a card, filled with pictures of people; when asked, she tells me, "This is you teaching me ballet, Mommy."
Daddy takes the trio downstairs, and I fall back to sleep.  I wake at 9:30--as a mother of toddlers, this is an all too rare luxury.  I head downstairs to check in--we all have some cereal, and I head to the shower.  We have plans.  Big plans. Stupidly risky plans.  We are taking three toddlers to a fancy restaurant for brunch.  We get dressed, do hair, Big Man sports a suit and tie.  He tells me I look pretty in my dress.
We arrive--head to our table.  I fix a pair of plates for the girls, while Big Man sits with Tommy.  As I head to fix my own, I look over at the table, all is well.  When I return, Dani says, "I don't like this, Momm-ARRRRRRGH" and she starts to puke.  Thankfully she had the linen napkin on her lap.  I catch most of it in my hands and the napkin, and a fair amount lands on her dress. No one seems to notice in those fleeting minutes. As the staff (and owner) notice I am cleaning, they ask if everything is okay.  Big Man assures them it's no reflection on the food, as I bring Dani to the Ladies room.  We rinse her dress off, wash up and are as good as new.  The table now has a pink cloth napkin at her place and all is well.  My plate of food is cold, but we're staying!
Mother's Day Brunch, Take 2.

Tommy masters the fork, and, thankfully, doesn't play the spoon/fork/plate banging game too loudly.
Tori sits like a little lady, drinking her orange juice from a tea cup.  Dani does the same.
Tommy starts to get antsy so we head outside for some photos.  Tori is determined to clown around in every pic.
When we could catch Tommy, he smiled and was a handsome little dude.
Catching the three of them?  No way.  Between Tommy's need to move, and Tori's constipated face, we were doomed.
They did slightly better when they posed with Daddy.
This was us, headed back to the car.  Tommy was leading the charge.
Daddy and Dani paused for a photo.
It really was a lovely day.

And, I need to make a shout out to my mom.  I had a childhood full of love and creativity.  It was filled with playgrounds and beaches and adventures of all sorts.  Of songs, and stories, and unwavering love.  There were "tiger hunts" through the reeds at the beach (long before the universe was tick-paranoid) fresh air, and picnics, and just so much fun.  I am the mom that I am because of the mom that I had, and I very often think that I'm not doing it as well as she did.  Because she was awesome.  And now, she is showing that same love to my children--on the floor with them, bouncing on the beds, in the wagon to the park, and non-stop never-ending fun.  Love you Mom!

Mother's Day, a Dani and Tori Guest Post.

Hey Dani?

Yes Tori?

I'm really tired. It's hard to keep up with TWO grandmas!

I know Tori, that's why I'm just laying here taking a break.

They were really fun. Way more fun than mommy is.

I know, Tori, but don't tell mommy that, we don't want her to feel bad!

I like grandma's airplane rides best!

Me too Tori!

I sure wish they lived closer. I love grandma and great-grandma!
Me too, Tori! Let's tell them something together!

Happy Mother's Day grandma and great grandma! We love you!

Mommy's little helper.

Dani is very interested in helping mommy these days. Every time I start a task, I hear footsteps and a little voice saying, "Help mommy!" When I'm making dinner, we pull up the Costco stepstool and Dani "helps" me pour or mix or something (generally it just exponentially adds to the mess). When it's time to change Tori, she shrieks, "Go on Dani dock!" Dani dock is a Dani-invented phrase for the covered radiator next to the changing table that Dani insists on standing on to help me change Tori. Helping, on a good day can consist of Dani assisting me with the baby powder, and on a less good day, tickling Tori's feet or tummy while I'm changing her. Oh, did I mention that she is usually repeating, "big nasty poop" regardless of what's in Tori's diaper? Yep--no idea where that came from; I blame Big Man.
Tonight, the girls got to sit on the changing table and watch daddy snowblow. Dani wanted to "help daddy shovel".The cutest "help" she provides nightly is sneaking into the kitchen to feed the cats. I never see her do this, but usually once I've put her to bed, I find this in the service stairwell:

Apparently, my talented cats can open cans of food all by themselves. But that's Dani's way of helping, and I think it's adorable.

Oh yes, the other kiddo. She's fearless and trying like heck to walk!

We're supposed to get about 18" of snow tomorrow, so I hope to have some good snowy pics in the next day or two.

Grandmas are great, a Dani guest post.

Hi everybody, Dani here. My grandma and my great-grandma came to visit this week. It was really fun. Grandma taught me lots of new stuff. I learned how to do summersaults, go down the stairs, say lots of new words, and to give hugs. Great-grandma let me play with her cane. And, grandma let me do lots of stuff that mommy and daddy don't let me do...that was the best part.

Grandma let me hold my own cookies, and didn't care if I made a mess.
I got to have a lollipop and didn't have to share!
We spent a lot of time outside on my swingset--and unlike mommy, grandma didn't complain that I was hard to pick up because grandma's belly isn't big like mommy's.
And grandmas are good at taking walks. Aunt Renny and Chantal came on today's walk too.

Grandma even let me play with rocks and dirt and didn't care that I got all dirty.

Grandmas are WAY more fun than mommies and daddies. I sure hope they come back soon!

My kid's better than your kid........stop me before I compare again.

I am afraid I'm going to be one of those parents. Maybe I already am. You know, the one who needs to compare my kid to every other kid I see so that I can deem my kid superior in every way. Or not, which means my baby will quickly need to work extra hard to catch up. My baby will keep up with other babies!

I wish I were joking, but a woman came over last night with a baby 3 weeks older than Dani. And that baby could sit up! By herself! She used a sippy cup with ease. She held said sippy cup. She ate Gerber Beginnings Baby Puffs! My kid has not yet eaten of the Puff. She was, not as cute as my baby, but that was my only consolation. And I just kept telling myself (that Dani was cuter) while she was there, because life in B's world, is, after all, a competition.

I suck. I am the most competitive/judgmental person in the universe. This is incredibly ironic because I am absolutely unremarkable. No two things in my mind can ever be equal. I always like something better than the other, if there are more than one. If you are reading this and you have two kids, I like one of them better, and think one of them is cuter/funnier/smarter/less annoying, but don't ask because I will be too ashamed to admit it. Big Man thinks I'm crazy (but not crazy sexy fun crazy, just like crazy cat lady judgmental bitch crazy). He has twin nephews and very early into our relationship (round 2 that is) I asked him which of the twins he liked better. He said that he loved them the same, and I was all, "the same, you can't love two different things the same". Each time I see the little guys, I like one of them better than the other one because at that particular visit, one was more to my liking. It fluctuates. On any given day I like one of my cats better than the other too. Generally, that is whichever cat didn't puke. They puke all the flippin' time but that's another story.

So, back to Dani.
We had tummy time at 7am so Dani could work on her core strength so she can sit up soon. I stopped at Wal*Mart and got a first sippy cup so she could start to work on her sippy skillz. (Tried said sippy cup and it merely served to enrage her. She wasn't particulary hungry, and spit out all that she took in, perhaps out of spite!) I passed on the puffs, because even I realize that were she to choke (having no teeth and all) I could do time for being a completely negligent jackass.

I blame my mom (only kind of mom in a joking way, don't get all pissed off). She keeps encouraging me to get out my baby book to see what I was doing so I can compare it to Dani. So far, Dani would be losing and have to face more baby boot camp with her psychotic mommy. Apparently I was pretty advanced, what with the walking at 7 months and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at 18 months and all, but hey, I was a prodigy........or maybe my mom was really competitive too! It's all her fault, yeah, that's the ticket!

She really was loving her little tykes musical thingie tonight though..........ah the music eases the pain of the evil comparing mommy....rest assured if I was capable of cropping the video, you would not see the lumpy mommy abdomen.

Peace, y'all!

I got pricked.

Don't hurt my mommy!

Today, I went to the allergist to try to figure out why I am always sniffling and sneezing. Wow, it sucked.

30 pricks on my forearms, and then 10 injections in my upper arms. I'm extremely allergic to cats (good thing I have two), dust mites and tree pollens, mildly allergic to dogs and some other stuff. None of this news was a surprise. Got some allergy meds, let's hope they help. The red and swollen = allergic.

I can't believe we are leaving for Chicago next week. I have so much work to do before I go. I'm a little worried about a road trip with a baby and Big Man, but we will see.......let's just say Big Man and I have different traveling styles. I'm the stop at every interesting thing I see type, and Big Man stops for gas. period. Ugh. At least I'm reasonably confident the baby will need frequent stops.

status = not pregnant
better luck in June...

More Mother's Day pics.

I spent a lot of time taking Dani pics while Big Man slept.

Overall, Mother's Day............no big deal.

I'm pretty lucky every day.

Big Man is a loving husband and daddy.

He cooks dinner every night.
Loves me a bunch. Couldn't ask for more. Man, I took one awesome picture of Big Man holding Dani while she stares at his big arms, but, since you can see his face........can't post.....until I reload the "officer friendly" coverup..............until then, more video:

A Mother's Day thought

When I was pregnant, I used to joke that I wasn't worried if I'd be able to handle being a mom because crackheads and teenagers do it all the time and the kids turn out okay. Really, I wasn't worried because I had such a great example in my mom. (love you mom!)

Today, I learned that Dani is a fiend for prunes. Flailing her arms eating them as fast as I will give her spoonfuls. For her sake (and mine) I only gave her 1/2 jar in hopes of avoiding the great diaper blowout of 2009.

Two videos, here. Dani enjoying the heck out of her bouncy bounce:

And, Dani, getting ready for a nap today.

That's all. Off to eat some chocolate or something.

Two month visit.

Big Man took Dani to her 2 month doctor's visit yesterday. I avoided it like the plague. She was scheduled to get 4 shots! 4! Let me preface this by saying I can only speak from the experience of taking my cat to get shots. You can always get the first shot in because they don't know it's coming. But the wise, wise veteranarian knows to put all the immunizations in one syringe because kitty will shred you to ribbons if you think you are getting two pokes in. Not so with the defenseless baby, defenseless infantus, to be more scientific about it. I would guess that after the first shot, the baby might be somewhat disturbed. But then to know that you have to hold her for THREE more was more than I could even contemplate, so I just refused to attend.

So, the two month visit, attended by Big Man.
Dani's now 11 lbs., 4 oz. and is 23 1/2 inches long. The doctor says that she is smiling/recognizing faces early, and he said he felt the nubs of little teeth which may also be making an appearance soon.

According to Big Man, "She screamed like she's never screamed before. A pitch that was nearly audible only by dogs. You could never have handled it."

Big Man's highlight of the visit was the attention lavished upon him by every woman he saw. He described Dani as a "chick magnet" and said that he's never felt more like a rock star than he did yesterday. Apparently women of all ages love a man with a cute little baby.

I went to the Chamber of Commerce dinner last Friday, and the local paper posted a photo of me showing off Dani's pics! So no Dani pic today, just a mommy one. Mommy had meetings last night, and is going to an event with US Senator Gillibrand tonight!

Mommy update.

I head to the OB today for a post-surgery incision check. I'm feeling pretty okay, still quite sore around the middle.

I am pleased to report that today, I put on (a) my wedding band and engagement ring; and (b) my pre-pregnancy jeans--and they are roomy!

Now, let's preface this by saying I was a little fatty-pants before I got pregnant. But, I was very careful during the pregnancy to watch what I ate, and to minimize the baby weight gain, which was recommended by my doc due to my ample pre-pregnancy size. For the past two weeks, I've also tried to not let the baby stress make me eat a ton, and I realize that I can't keep eating for two (which was fun while it lasted). So, the doctor will perform the official weigh-in at 1:45pm today, but my scale reports that I weigh about 15 pounds less than I did when I got weighed on my 4/11/08 positive pregnancy test day.

Now, if I can just keep that progress up, and have another similar pregnancy, I should be in pretty decent shape...now remember, horizonal stripes are not a fat girl's friend.Notice the Christmas tree--it's up, there are presents underneath it, only there are NO ornaments! Well, there's one--Tara sent us a "Baby's First Christmas" which made it to the tree, but the rest are still in the basement! Oh well, the lights are pretty enough.

***update, 9pm; went to the OB, weighed 19 pounds less than my 4/11/08 7 week ultrasound...even better! (ate a whole frozen pizza for dinner, though, so 15 pounds probably more accurate now!)
